2.1 Transition to the SWLL – Introduction

This book suggests that you change your lifestyle. This is a big undertaking. The change will take months to accomplish. In this chapter, we look at the preparatory work you can do and the steps to take as you transition to the SWLL. By doing this work, you will have a solid understanding of what the SWLL is, why it works, and what you must do. When you do start on the SWLL, the preparatory work you have done will increase the likelihood of a successful outcome.

Here is what you will find in the rest of this chapter:

  • Adopt a proper mental set. Your goal is not to lose weight but to adopt a new lifestyle.
  • Assess your health, your calorie intake and your level of activity. The data you assemble here will be a baseline as your lifestyle changes.
  • Ask, “Why am I overweight?” Is it because of your genes? A hormone imbalance? Your lifestyle? Or some other cause? If you conclude lifestyle is the cause, this will enhance your motivation to change it.
  • Experiment. When you adopt the SWLL you will make many changes. By experimenting you can choose palatable alternatives to some of the foods you currently eat and which activities to embrace.
